Well we did it!
We moved into our New Home.
Although I wouldn't say we're all moved in just yet. We have furniture and boxes everywhere. It's very chaotic around here, but everyday it gets a little bit more organized.
I can't wait to have it all put together.
There has been a few little hiccups along the way, had to convert our 3 prong dryer into a 4 prong dryer to fit into the correct socket. We had to fix a leaky outdoor faucet, we lost a dresser in the move, it fell over and got busted up. We had to get all of our utilities all hooked up, and we're just trying to learn all of the quirks that come with a new house.
But we love it here.
I wake up every morning feeling so Lucky to get to live in this awesome home.
Ok so since we just made this big move, I thought I'd share some tips that worked for us.
Now our situation was a little different. We only moved 30 minutes away, and since Jake was driving out here to go to work everyday, and I was coming out to work on the house, we would both pack up our cars with a lot of the little stuff. This actually made a huge difference in the end. All that was left was the furniture, and we moved it all in a big U-haul truck. I just have to add, Jake and I made this whole moving trip all by ourselves. We were Rockstar Movers! Well I guess us and our Dolly.
So Tip #1 is to rent a dolly with your truck. I don't know if we could have done this move without it.
Tip #2
I was surprised by how little of boxes we used.
Instead, I used what we already had, like; Suitcases, coolers, drawers, baskets, laundry baskets, bags, garbage sacks and plastic bins.
The bins were the most handy, we would unload them at the new house and then bring them back to fill up again.
Tip #3
Instead of bubble wrap or newspaper, I used our towels, table cloths and linens to wrap things up.
I also used cheap paper plates in between all of my kitchen plates to help protect them.
Tip #4
Stuff hanging clothes into garbage sacks while still on the hangers.
This helps to keep clothes all together, and then they are all ready to hang up in your new closet.
Tip# 5
Clean your new bathrooms ahead of time, if possible. At the end of a long moving day, nothing is better then taking a hot shower in a clean bathroom. Also don't forget to stock them with toilet paper.
Tip #6
Clean kitchen cabinets ahead of time, if possible. It's amazing how much kitchen stuff we have. I made organizing the kitchen the first thing to do on my list. It was nice to get it all out of the way and have a working kitchen right away.
Tip #7
Pack your food up, or make a trip to the grocery store. Have easy to eat meals on hand so you don't have to eat out too much.
Tip #8
Make your beds up as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did after a long day of moving.
Tip #9
If moving with kids, make sure to have snacks on hand. Let them help out, my boy's got a kick out of caring things out to the big truck. And just remember moving is a lot on a little one, so be patient and understanding with them.
Tip #10
Pack a special bag with items you will need right away, such as; toiletries, toothbrushes, and medications. Carry this bag with you and find a place for it as soon as you get to your new location. You don't want to have to go searching for these things.
So these are my moving tips. If you have any more to add, feel free to leave them in a comment below.
Once things get a bit more "Normal" around here, I'll blog about my new painted kitchen cabinets.
Thanks for stopping by,
Emily

#3 is so clever!
ReplyDeleteLove the tips! I can't wait to see your painted cabinets!
ReplyDeleteHi, Emily. Congratulations on your move! My hubby and I moved last August from a large house in the suburbs to a small cottage by a lake, so I can relate to all the joys of moving. We also did all the moving ourselves. I just found your blog and LOVE your style choices in decorating! We've already done some changes to our little cottage, but have lots of other things we want to do to make it our own. It's fun to be creative and think of what you can do in each room! I am following your posts, as I am excited to see what you will be doing to your adorable new abode!

I agree with your conclusions and looking forward to your coming updates. Thanks for sharing.

Those are great tips-I used most of them to make the move this summer. The one other thing I did which helped so much is to go to the store and get several larger size boxes of Press-n-Seal. We used it on dresser drawers to keep stuff in and put drawers back in once dresser in truck. Then I used it for every little thing, from kitchen gadget drawers to earring and necklace trees. Everything arrived intact even if jostled and clean.I will never move again without it ;-)
ReplyDeletethat is a fantastic idea I have never seen anywhere else on the internet, thanks so much for mentioning it. Tabby
DeleteFantastic tips here. I especially agree with #10-have an overnight bag for the day of the move. And I'd expand on #5. Bring TP and a new shower curtain liner. Nothing sucks more than getting to the end of the day and not having one of those (from experience).
DeleteThe tip above is also a great idea. I have used cling wrap like that in the past but press-n-seal sounds like it would work even better. Another tip I'd add is have lots of sandwich bags handy. If you take something apart of if something has special hanging hardware (mirrors, curtain rods, etc.), put the small pieces in a bag and tape it to the big piece.
Congrats to the whole family, Emily! I enjoyed reading this! I actually just made a big move on my own -- opening my own law firm. It's funny, I started taking home files and pictures everyday for a few weeks in anticipation kind of like how you all did. It made the final packing process so much easier! Anyway, congrats, and I would love to see you all one day!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new house! While reading through your tips, It reminded me of what I did when I used to move houses. I did almost everything wrong! Cleaning my bathroom ahead of time was supposed to be the first on my list. Now, I’ve learned my lesson, so the next time I need to move, I'll keep in my all the tips you posted here.

Congratulations! I moved from PA to SC a year ago. We also had a large yard sale before packing into our moving van too.
ReplyDeleteMost of your stuff are set and organized.

I like your tip number two: moving your stuff would look like much better if it’s in suitcase than lame brown carton boxes. I was curious about how your new house looks like, so I browsed upon your previous entry. It’s really beautiful and very inspiring, indeed. :-)

Congrats and best of luck to your moving.

I am extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one nowadays.

When packing some things like binders and books we still used regularly, we placed the boxes on their sides on the shelves and counters and left them open. That way, we still had easy access, but they were still packed. The night before our move we just closed and taped what was still open.
ReplyDeleteAnother handy tip: Don't just write the room on the box, write what items are inside in smaller print.
For #3, I use all of my saved grocery bags! When you know a move is.coming, save them. I wrap each plate, glass, everything breakable in my bags. They are perfect to roll up a candle in and then put it in a bag and roll that up as well. Extra protection and FREE! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd for #4, I did the garbage bag trick when I moved also. But, I bought cheap bags and put holes in the bottom, put my hangers through the hole, and tied the bag at the bottom of the clothes. This ensures that all of the clothes are covered and secure, but the hangers are available to lift the bag with. :)
ReplyDeleteI love all the tips and have used many myself moving... I would like to add this note, when using garbage bags, be sure to use clear (leaf type bags) or semi-sheer, not black. I have lost far to many clothes, blankets, and other items because somebody was being helpful and took the "garbage" out.
DeleteWe've used rubber bands instead of bags for clothes. the biggest help we had with our many moved is to get as many colors of masking or painters tape as you have rooms in the new house. when packing boxes it just takes two strips of tape on the corner of the boxes & then a piece of tape on the door frame in the house and EVERYONE will know what room the box belongs to. use drawers from dressers to pack things - I covered the tops of my drawers with a paper bag & taped down. keep drawers out of furniture when you move them it greatly reduces the weight & gives you extra grab holes. also purchase the dolly - I use mine A LOT! I can fill my trash can extra full and don't have to worry about carrying a heavy bag outside I just put the can on the dolly & roll it outside to the big can.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea...unless your husband is color-blind, like mine! I guess I'd have to go with some of the patterned duct tape that is being sold now!

ReplyDeleteCONGRATS on your new home!!! How exciting it is. We just moved into this new home in Oct. so I know what you mean, and I did alot of your tips too. However, we had lived in our previous house for 29 years so have ALOT of stuff!!1 Probably between 200 and 300 boxes came here and that is after FILLING a dumpster at the old house before packing! I also labeled EVERY box with the room it went to and then put an 8 by 10 sheet of paper on the doorframe of each rrom so our helpers knew just where to take each box. It worked GREAT! I found you via Pinterest. XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI number my boxes, then keep a detailed list of what's in them. If you have several boxes marked "Kitchen" that's helpful, but being specific helped me when unpacking!
ReplyDeleteIronically, I do this with my three daughter's Christmas presents to make sure nothing is forgotten. This is a great idea though. An inventory is a wonderful ideal to keep track of belongings, especially if it was paired with the colored tape idea.
DeleteGreat tips thanks! I will be moving soon and plan to pack our suitcases full the weekend before the move with everything that we will need for that week (toiletries, work clothes, etc.) so that we can have EVERYTHING else boxed up and ready to move Saturday morning. (Of course with the exception of a few plates and other living essentials. Hope it all works as planned.
ReplyDeletePack up a mini tool kit to have handy as well!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! As a young adult I moved every year (sometimes twice a year) for 10 years. Beer boxes are the best. They have handles and can carry heavy items, especially books. You can also get them free from the bar or liquor store.
ReplyDeleteI also always make a necessity bag: a roll of paper towel, all purpose cleaner, toilet paper, shower curtain, garbage bags, small tool box, dish soap, dishcloth, towel, etc. I throw it all in a reusable grocery bag and unpack it first.
Tip #3 and #4 are just brilliant. I am moving in the next few weeks so this is perfect timing. I would never have thought of that at all.
ReplyDeleteI used my towels for my breakable and better than paper plates use your kitchen towels to separate the plates. The one thing i liked about when i moved a year ago is that i prioritized what i can take over to my new place, what i wanted like the books and movie that i don't need on a daily basis. Cause when it came down to the last week of the move all i had was the everyday items. I think the best part of my move i was able to ask my self if i really needed certain items, I got rid of stuff that was taking up space, and space it something we all want cause we can't have enough open space!
ReplyDeleteI always do up a basket with screwdrivers, tape, measuring tape, a hammer, wet ones, an allenwrench, calculator, kleenex and toilet paper, lightbulbs. This has saved me many a time.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic!
DeleteGreat tips, but won't work in a big move that has to go all at once. One suggestion - pack a suitcase for each person to survive a week without needing anything else. For example: clothes, shoes, pj's, toys, diapers, toothbrush etc. Then put those in the car (so you know where they are) and in the case that you really don't get unpacked for awhile, nothing is urgent for personal hygiene and dressing. Don't forget the favorite blanket and sleeping pillow.
ReplyDeleteNICE BLOG!!! Packers and Movers are said to be those people who help you to pack and move your belongings in the safest and the most convenient way. Thanks for sharing a nice information.

I have two clever sisters for their recent move... they went and bought various colors of duct tape. They made a list of colors and catagorized. When they packed a box they cut a piece of tape and put it on the corner of each box. When they got where they were going...across many states...they knew where to put the boxes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a GREAT idea!
DeleteSeriously, these are great tips! I've moved so many times and I've never thought about packing my hanging clothes like you've suggested. Really appreciate these ideas! :)

Having moved a LOT in my fairly young life (30 times in 27 years), I whole-heartedly support this post! I have to say, of all these fantastic ideas, #8 is the one I can't stress enough. Make sure those beds are made! Nothing is more stressful than working hard and long and then having a mountain of stuff on a bed that may not even be put together yet - just a mattress set on the floor. Definitely a stress-er, whether you realize it or not.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I found that made moving easier was to buy a large roll of plastic cover (saran wrap) at Sam's or Costco for $10-12 a roll. You can use it to wrap plastic around drawers and hold things in or to wrap large pieces of furniture (buffet, table, dressers, etc...) and electronics. It's not the most environment friendly but it definitely keeps things from getting scratched and dinged during the move!
ReplyDeleteThank you for these helpful tips, Emily! I like the idea of tip #4 very much! That would be more convenient than hanging clothes up one by one. Plus, I don’t have to fold each one and stuff them all up in a bag.
ReplyDeleteClay Delgado
I find the wrapping all of your flat screens with blankets when moving helps protect the screens and keeps them snug in place while driving. And zip tying all the water hoses and putting them in a trash bag make them very easy to handle!! And last but not least we put old fitted sheets on the mattresses so they don't get dirty when touching the ground.
ReplyDeleteWith moving 3 times in 9 months, I'm getting this down PAT!
ReplyDelete1.)We always pack a suitcase like we are going on a week long camping trip, with clothes, toiletries, and medicines.
2.)We like to have one big rubbermaid bin with towels, toilet paper, soap, first aid kit, snacks, notecards, pens and paper and the blue painters tape. This allows us to stock bathrooms, write down little notes or tape signs where we want things if people are helping us.
3.)We use old fitted sheets over our mattresses for moving, and use other sheets, towel, wash clothes on breakables or to fill spaces in boxes.
4.)Use plastic grocery bags from anything to filling extra space in boxes to wrapping items in. Anything that is liquid is being put in a bag tied up tight before going in a box!
5.)Set up one room right away, preferably a room that you pass often while unloading most boxes, this way you feel like you've made progress!
6.)Tape notecards to the outsides of boxes saying what room you want it unpacked in, and then little notes to yourself about what is inside.
And my number ONE rule. - - -"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." William Morris
Great reminder when packing up things you may not need or don't even like!
My number 1 rule as well- moving is a great time to get rid of stuff you don't use. Keep the sentimental items, lose the extra kitchen gadgets that have been in the back of the cupboard for years! These things can benefit the local thrift shops, and you don't need them!
DeleteFunny (now) story... sorted through EVERYTHING before moving, had three piles for the basement-- one said "Move" the another said "Donate" and the third "Trash". We recruited friends and family to help us, bless their hearts; but, unfortunately loaded every single box from every pile in a mixed fashion. I ended up sorting through my stuff twice! Yikes! (A word to the wise- don't assume anyone is paying attention on moving day!!) :)
Nice tips! Even though you moved only 30 minutes away, I was also able to apply this info to my own long distance move. I plan on making my big move in July and I just had a garage sell last weekend to get rid of extra things that I no longer used or needed. I am also using suitcases, boxes, and storage cases I already have to reduce costs. Now it's time to make some calls to moving companies long distance to find some affordable rates.
ReplyDeleteLong-distance moves are a very different animal from local moves. Moving long distances usually entails greater expense and requires a more experienced and properly licensed moving company. Moving from state to state or province to province is usually not performed by local movers.

Well, congratulations for your successful move. These tips are really amazing. I once helped relocate a friend of mine and it was a very stressful move. Lots of things went wrong especially with the packing stage. We used lots of boxes without thinking of other alternatives like those you have mentioned like the cooler. We also used newspapers and now I realize that indeed, towels and blankets can be a great substitute. This will be helpful for those who are planning to travel or move (with the help of movers Nebraska for instance). I really learned a lot with your post. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment.I will keep visiting this blog very often. events in Nebraska
ReplyDeleteThese are very good tips, thanks so much for sharing them! I think another good tip is to find moving companies who travel a long distance if you have a lot of stuff and will be traveling pretty far. I just moved to the west coast from the east coast and my moving process couldn't have went any smoother!
ReplyDeleteDuring the house move, there are hundreds of things you need to take care of, finding a reliable moving company is on the top. Every house removal requires a professional service in terms of packing, storage and logistics solutions and only a reliable company can ensure you a stress free move. Here are some useful tips to make your move stress free.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, a quick web search will enable you find a handful of companies which deals in offering house removals services. These firms got experts available with them who do have great expertise and extensive knowledge in this industry and thus offer safe and secured removals as per their client's specifications.
ReplyDeleteThe workers at Lincoln Moving and Storage were so professional and so helpful. The staff anticipated and answered many of my questions, and was extremely helpful. Everything especially my paintings were handled with great care. Thank you. You made a sometimes stressful experience a very easy process. Contact them at Contact us today at http://lincolnmoving.com or (716) 874-1380. They simplify your moving and storage worries.
ReplyDeleteI have moved 13 times in 14 years. I have used all of these at one point another. Sometimes we have moved just down the street others 100s of miles away. Another tip I have found is organize before you move. Make sure all your boxes make sense. Pack kitchen cabinet things in the same box as you find them in the cabinet. Same goes for the rest of the house. If you have certain bathroom stuff that always goes together pack them in the same box. It makes unpacking so much easier. By doing this I usually have the whole house put away the same day we move, no matter how far. All I have left is hanging pictures and curtains. You would be amazed at how many people don't do this. Don't fill up a little extra space in a box with something that doesn't even go with it!
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks for these!!
Pair these tips with the service of http://www.bellsremovals.com.au and you'll definitely have a hassle-free move.
These are some really excellent tips! My boyfriend and I will be moving at the end of the summer, and we're currently packing up a lot of the smaller stuff and looking at different moving companies. Good luck with the rest of your unpacking, it sounds like you've got it all organized.
